Your first ebook: Writing it is only half the story

Since ebooks are shorter than print books, they don’t take long to write. And of course, if you don’t want to write your ebook, you can out-source the process.

Don’t get hung up on the writing: it’s only half the story. Marketing (promoting) your ebook is the other half - and the promotion needs to be on-going.

However, before you start writing, and way before you start promoting, you need to do something else…

Research your ebook’s audience - what do they want and need?

I keep a notebook with ideas for ebooks, and I research the ideas for several months before I decide whether or not the ebook is worth writing and promoting. I want to know who the audience is, what they want, and whether they’ll pay for an ebook.

If the ebook will take a lot of time and resources, I’ll run a Pay Per Click ad on Google AdWords first, to see how keen the potential buyers are. If I get very few clicks on the ad, I know that this market is either not ready for an ebook, or it’s finding the information elsewhere.

How will you promote the ebook?

If you don’t promote your ebook, it won’t sell. Decide on your marketing strategies before you write your ebook. Your research will show you which promotional activities will pay off best.
