Writing ebooks for others: pricing your services
Saturday, July 14th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedYou’re ready to go into business as a writer of ebooks. Perhaps you’ve read ebooks and thought “I can write that!” or perhaps you’re looking to extend the writing services you offer.
The prices you charge: gotta name? You can charge more
On my writing sites, I hammer the marketing aspect of a writing career, and I often think it’s a losing battle… inexperienced writers, and many professional writers just don’t understand the whole marketing thing. Unfortunately, until they understand marketing, they’re condemned to being price takers, rather than price makers.
A common tale of woe is: “I can’t get any writing gigs that pay well!”
My response is always: “How much marketing did you do this week?”
And of course the response to that question is always the same - the writer did no marketing, no one knows his or her name, and it’s not surprising that the writer doesn’t have a block of work lined up.
Writers who market have LONG waiting lists, of at least three to six months. If you don’t have a waiting list of people who want you to write ebooks for them, all it means is that you haven’t realized the value of promoting your name and your writing services.
Charge what you need to do a great job writing the ebook
Price your ebook writing services is simple: you charge what is right for you. What’s your time worth? I know writers who are experienced, who think that charging $1500 for a 100-page ebook is great money… that’s fine. Other writers who know the value of their services charge many times that amount.
To set a price for your ebook writing, you need to know your hourly rate, whether it’s $50 or $150. Multiply that by the number of hours you estimate the ebook will take, and you have your writing fee.
