Marketing Your Ebook: You Need a Plan

by Angela on November 4, 2010

Thinking about going into the ebook writing and selling business? I’ve been doing it for years. It’s the perfect home business, with very low start-up costs.

Here’s the most valuable tip I can give you: Most new ebook writers start the wrong way around. They write their ebook, then they wonder where they’ll sell it.

Please don’t do that: Create a marketing plan first. You need to know who’ll buy your ebook, and what it will take to put it in front of these people.

I wrote this post, A marketing plan for your ebook – create a plan before you write | Top Ebook Writer way back in 2007. It was one of my first posts. I said that your marketing plan should include:

“* Marketing venues (Web site, news releases, advertising etc)

* Costs and the likely return on your investment

* Who and when – who’s marketing this ebook? How much time will it take?

When you’ve created a marketing plan, you can write your ebook with confidence.”

Three years on, when the world is hungrier than ever for information products, it’s still the best advice you’ll receive. Please take it to heart.

Want to write and sell ebooks? If you’d love to create a new career, but feel that writing is too hard, you’re about to discover a three-minute guide to writing your first ebook.

If you follow this simple process, exactly as written, you’ll write a great ebook, in a much shorter time-frame than you believe possible.

1. Pick a Topic: Think “Pain”

What topic will you cover? If you don’t already have a topic in mind (or even if you do) think about the “pain” factor.

People will buy your ebook because they have a problem. Maybe they’re drowning in debt, they have a health condition, or they want to learn how to do something.

The more specifically you can target a particular audience (think of just one person with one problem), the more likely it is that your ebook will sell, and sell well.

2. Create an Outline As a Simple List

Got a “pain”? Excellent.

Now write down a simple list of what you’ll cover.

Something like:

The pain — how they got it, or how they know they have it

Describe how they’ll feel when they get rid of the pain

The steps to eliminating that pain from their lives

Etc.

3. Forget Your Outline, and Just Write

You’ve got an outline. That’s great.

The next step is to forget about your outline completely. Yes, forget it.

Of course, you won’t be able to forget it completely, but it’s essential that when you’re writing, you allow yourself to feel free, and enjoy the process. If you try to stick closely to your outline, you’ll over-think it and procrastinate.

4. Writing Is a Process: Draft, then Revise (Re-See) and Edit

The first version of your ebook is your First Draft. Just write this as fast as you can. Complete it, before you start to revise.

Once you’ve completed the draft, it’s time to revise. This isn’t tinkering with word choices, it’s re-seeing — looking at your draft to see what you have, what you need to add, and what you need to delete.

Finally, once you’ve revised, it’s time to edit your ebook. Now you can bring in the grammar police, and change anything that needs changing.

Then… you’re done.

In this article, you discovered the three-minute guide to writing your first (or next) ebook. You learned to choose a topic which will sell, to outline, then to forget your outline, and finally you realized that writing is a process.
